Earlier this week, KQED did a great piece on local journalism - the challenges facing local news outlets and the importance of their reporting.
A free press is absolutely essential to any democracy, and I can think of no better example than here in Vallejo. It's critical that we have trustworthy and unbiased local reporting to daylight key issues, expose misconduct, and keep the public informed.
I am incredibly grateful for the reporters at the Vallejo Times-Herald, Open Vallejo, and The Vallejo Sun who have gone the extra mile to ask tough questions, pore over public records, and pursue the truth in the face of obstruction and intimidation. I am also grateful for those at KQED, the SF Chronicle, and other regional outlets who have helped shine a spotlight on Vallejo.
It's an essential check and balance, and we need far more of it, and far more support for it.
As Mayor, I will do everything I can to promote transparency and inclusion. My door will always be open, and I will continue to be a staunch supporter of a free and independent press. We are stronger together, when we are included and informed.
