I had the opportunity to be interviewed as part of this NY Times feature about increases in gun violence during the pandemic. In addition to sharing information about Vallejo's economy and history, I discussed the Surveillance Advisory Board's work and Vallejo's upcoming test of gunshot detection technology.
I emphasized that the city's current public safety crisis and police understaffing is rooted in more than just the national trends, but rather a history of misconduct and obstruction of reform that has fueled community mistrust. I am glad that context made it into the article and appreciate the quote by my friend Mz. Askari Sowonde.
I am committed to addressing these public safety issues, including the issue of gun violence, as Vallejo's next Mayor.
